Americans Overestimate How Much Goes to Foreign Aid


A large majority of the public wildly overestimates the amount of the federal budget spent on foreign assistance. About half say the U.S. government spends more than ten percent of the budget, and, on average, Americans say that spending on foreign aid makes up roughly a quarter of the government's budget!

Just 1 in 20 Americans correctly states that one percent or less of the federal budget is spent on foreign assistance. Most people think the U.S. should spend between five to ten percent!
